On February 11, 1990 two very important events were celebrated: The release of former President Nelson Mandela from prison in South Africa and the birth of Movements: The Afro-Caribbean Dance Ensemble here in Edmonton. Since then, Movements has gained momentum and has become Edmonton’s foremost African based dance company. It achieved that success by providing dance opportunities to young girls and boys. Movements has touched and changed the lives of thousands of young people who might otherwise have made unwise choices. Motivated to making even more of a difference in the lives of the youth, Movements expanded its reach in 2003 through a newer social initiative; GETfest(Getting Everyone Together Youth Festival). Driven by a youth steering committee made up of leadership students from city wide local schools, this initiative promotes unity within the community among youth and encourages them to realize the endless possibilities of their potential. Inspired by Nelson Mandela, we offer to youth a foundation of strength and hope.
