Nunavut is both the largest and most recent addition to the Canadian Confederation. It was officially separated from Northwest Territories on April 1st 1999 by the Nunavut Act and the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. Although largest in physical size Nunavut is actually the least populated of the Canadian Provinces with a population of under 40,000. It's capital Iqaluit is home to just under 6,000 of the regions population. According to a 2001 survey 60% of it's residents are Inuit. Iqaluit was chosen via a territory wide referendum, it was chosen over Rankin Inlet. Nunavut is home to some very well known and important mines. For example Lupin Mine is an important source of gold in Canada, Jericho Diamond Mine is active and still producing, it is roughly 400km from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.
