Job Summary

We're growing again!

Underwriting by Exception where only pre-determined rules will require Underwriter intervention. In these cases, the Underwriter will obtain all necessary information relevant to the risk to develop the exposures in order to refuse or amend and accept a risk at the prescribed rates. Responsible for underwriting and processing personal lines automobile and property insurance risks with in the established rules and guidelines to ensure business retention and profitability of non- branded business.

Authority for three underwriting decisions: reinstatement of policies outside legislative requirements for defined values of RI, claims removal and backdating coverage along with management of complex requests beyond the skills and knowledge of the Underwriters in each group.

Job Responsibilities

Within the underwriting team, subject matter expertise resides in this role as the first point of referral to the Underwriters for guidance, problem resolution and supporting the unit in deploying subject matter expertise to delivery of projects and continuous improvement initiatives as required.

Key Accountabilities:

Answer incoming calls in Underwriting Exception queue delivering superior customer service. Responsible to resolve calls relating to underwriting rules, referral and eligibility. Assigned on a rotational basis.

Authority for three underwriting decisions: reinstatement of policies outside legislative requirements for defined values of RI, claims removal and backdating coverage along with management of complex requests beyond the skills and knowledge of the Underwriters in each group.

Responsible for offline underwriting: renewals, portfolio transfers, post-claim underwriting, and project execution relating to underwriting.

Assigned on a rotational basis

Responsible for offline report decisioning: Motor vehicle reports, inspection reports, Hits reports.


Provide feedback to other team members to assist in developing their knowledge

Remain current with all product changes, price, procedures and underwriting as required in a cross brand environment

Education/Experience Required

Minimum 5 years insurance underwriting experience with expert knowledge of all underwriting processes within at least one Aviva brand and excellent communication skills - verbal and written. Strong decision making, problem solving skills and analytical skills; high degree of collaboration, negotiation and influencing skills; superior customer service skills. Ability to work in structured environment with minimal supervision; strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize and related experience in a call center /contact center environment an asset. Minimum college preparation; university is desirable, as with CIP course work/designation.
