Great Bear Nature Tours is seeking a highly motivated candidate to work as a Relief Chef/Housekeeper at our ecotourism lodge on the central coast of British Columbia. We host people from around the world to see the grizzly bears of the Great Bear Rainforest. The lodge is small, accommodating a maximum of 10 guests, thus providing a very personal experience.

Job Description: As the Relief Chef/Housekeeper, you will be providing relief for either the Lodge Chef or the Head Housekeeper on their days off. You will have two separate sets of responsibilities depending on whether you are filling in for the Chef or Housekeeper. While acting as Chef, you will have the primary responsibility of preparing meals for the lodge and staff. The quality of food at Great Bear Lodge is characterized as ‘wilderness gourmet’ and is an essential part of the experience here. While housekeeping, you will have primary responsibility for the cleanliness of the lodge, and the comfort of the guests while they are at the lodge. This offers a unique opportunity to work in the area of ecotourism while living in a spectacular wilderness setting.

Your duties as Relief Chef include:
• Preparing and serving delicious and well-presented meals for up to 10 guests for lunch and dinner.
• Preparing nutritious lunches and dinners for 5-8 staff.
• Kitchen clean-up and management of food storage areas.
• Ordering food and supplies and maintaining inventory.
• Supervising the Volunteer Housekeepers in their kitchen duties

Your duties as Relief Housekeeper include:
• Preparing and serving simple, nutritious breakfasts for up to 10 guests.
• All house-keeping duties for the guest lodge, including changing rooms on guests departure
• Acting as a welcoming host to the guests when they take breaks from wildlife viewing by greeting them and providing drinks/snacks.
• Supervising the Volunteer Housekeepers in their housekeeping duties

We are a small team and occasionally you may be called upon to assist with other tasks that are outside of your job description.

Minimum Position requirements:
1. Professional restaurant experience or other experience cooking for large groups of people with a range of dietary preferences and restrictions. Some background in kitchen management an asset.
2. Previous experience serving and/or housekeeping in a wilderness lodge, boutique hotel or bed and breakfast.
3. Strong interpersonal skills, clean professional appearance.
4. Driven to provide excellent customer service and exceed customer expectations on a daily basis.
5. Ability to work cheerfully and independently in a remote lodge for long periods of time, working and living very closely with other staff members and guests.
6. FOODSAFE certification, or other certification for food handling.

Highly Desirable additional qualifications:
1. Working verbal ability in any of the following languages: German, Italian, French, Spanish, or Japanese.
2. First Aid training.

Successful Candidates will:
1. Be self-starters with a strong work ethic.
2. Be independent and respectful of other staff work obligations and personal space.
3. Savor life in a remote wilderness setting with limited access to communication or traditional social life.
4. Enjoy working in an open, guest-accessed kitchen environment.

Background:
Great Bear Nature Tours has been providing quality wildlife viewing experiences with a strong emphasis on natural history interpretation and minimum ecological impact since 1999. We are fortunate to live and work in a beautiful ecosystem and our goal is to share this special place with guests from all over the world in a sustainable manner. The wildlife call this place home, we are merely guests in their valley.
